Baby's First Drum Machine is an interactive 3D visualizer that doubles as a simple drum machine, allowing visitors to create visually stunning beats using their smartphones. By scanning a QR code and accessing the web app, their smartphones become drum machine controllers, allowing them to interact with the drum machine displayed on the screen.
The experience doesn't stop there – users can enhance their creations by playing along with guitars, microphones, or any instrument of their choice. The dynamic 3D animations respond in real-time to both the programmed beats and live instrumental input, creating a mesmerizing audiovisual spectacle. This installation encourages collaborative creativity, as multiple users can join in simultaneously, each contributing their own musical elements to the ever-evolving composition.
The visuals on the screen combine three layers: the drum patterns controlled via smartphone, visualizations of guitar performances, and imagery from the camera.
In the version showcased at the Tokyo Pedal Summit in November 2024, three distinct drum sound and animation presets were introduced, each offering a completely different atmosphere. Additionally, the 'QR Souvenir Module' was implemented, allowing participants to take home the visuals and audio from their performance as a QR code.
