Baby's First Drum Machine

2024 | Interactive Installation

SOUND DESIGN : : Joseph Minadeo

ART + CODE : : Siori Kitajima

An interactive 3D audio-visualizer and networked drum machine, Baby’s First Drum Machine turns smartphones into remote controls for a shared sonic and visual experience. Visitors scan a QR code to access the web app—then use their device to trigger beats and manipulate real-time generative visuals, all rendered through the venue’s speakers and projection/screen.

The experience doesn't stop there – users can enhance their creations by playing along with guitars, microphones, or any instrument of their choice. The dynamic 3D animations respond in real-time to both the programmed beats and live instrumental input, creating a mesmerizing audiovisual spectacle. This installation encourages collaborative creativity, as multiple users can join in simultaneously, each contributing their own musical elements to the ever-evolving composition.

The visuals on the screen combine three layers: the drum patterns controlled via smartphone, visualizations of guitar performances, and imagery from the camera.
In the version showcased at the Tokyo Pedal Summit in November 2024, three distinct drum sound and animation presets were introduced, each offering a completely different atmosphere. Additionally, the 'QR Souvenir Module' was implemented, allowing participants to take home the visuals and audio from their performance as a QR code souvenir.
